Help build a path for your whole career—from starting out to retirement and beyond

NZEI Te Riu Roa members are working with the Ministry of Education and the NZ School Trustees Association to help put together a new career framework.

As part of our last round of collective bargaining, we agreed on terms of reference about what we want to see in this framework. We want to make sure that the group who's working on this can really represent us, so we're looking to you to get involved and have your say.

It’s really important that all primary teachers and principals are involved in this work so that the framework we develop is robust and will work for everyone. This site gives you tools and resources to participate.

Term 2 member engagement is on now

With your feedback from the earlier phases, we've worked alongside the Ministry and NZSTA on a conceptual model as the basis for a new framework. It's now time to have your say.

Why are we doing this?

Here in New Zealand we pride ourselves on providing an innovative and world leading education for all our students.

Teachers and principals are focused on improving learning outcomes for all children, growing a love of learning and helping every student reach their potential.

We know that in order to provide the best possible education for the students we teach, we need to be empowered and supported to reach our own professional potential.

But a pathway to achieve that hasn’t always been clear. Opportunities to develop our careers, till now, have been ad hoc.

Most of the time our career progression has depended on the school we’re working in, whether we’ve got management aspirations and, if we do, whether there are units, or allowances available.

Then there’s the fact that not all of us want to be managers.  Many of us feel we have more to offer our students, and our profession, by developing our knowledge  and expertise in other ways.

What we need is a framework that allows us to develop our careers in a way that supports our own professional aspirations, and builds on our individual strengths, while also building the teaching capability and leadership of the entire profession.
